Taped Welcoming Remarks by John Huppenthal, Arizona State Superintendent of Public Instruction
“What can I do to get kicked out of school.” Some students actually set themselves up to be suspended and are rewarded if they act up. Many schools today still utilize suspension; even though it has been found to be an ineffective intervention. If we want to actively engage our students and promote academic achievement, we need to keep our students in school.
This session will focus on the data available about why schools suspend students and the disadvantages of suspension. The majority of time will be focused on creating positive interventions, earned privileges for students’ appropriate behavior, and common behavior problems occurring in today’s schools and a whole array of logical consequences that are designed to teach the student rather than removing him from school.
See the big picture and learn the principles of creating a culture of PBIS in your school or district. This scientific and evidence-based practice is used throughout the nation (mandated in many states) and will come alive through a video clip of PBIS in action at Arizona elementary, middle and high schools, and with ample photos of PBIS implementation in schools across the state.
This session will focus on a whole array of practical adaptations that are designed to create an engaging environment in which all students can achieve success. The adaptations discussed will be ones that are easy for any teacher to implement and are built on the premise that the classroom should be a fun and exciting place for students to be. This session will be appropriate for all levels from early childhood through high school.
